Custom cabinets in Coto de Caza

Coto de Caza homes sit on big lots behind guard gates, and many were finished in the heavy Tuscan look of their era. We redesign them room by room, with cabinetry built for hot, dry canyon summers.

Including Los Ranchos Estates and The Village.

A ranch, then a gated village

Coto de Caza started as ranch land and was marketed as a hunting, riding and country-club retreat in the early 1970s. The first homes went up in the mid-1970s, and after a slow stretch the community grew through the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s into a guard-gated village of roughly 4,000 homes spread across the canyons of south Orange County. Riding trails, stables and the equestrian center are still a big part of daily life here, and inside the gates sit separate enclaves like Los Ranchos Estates, a private community of about 75 large custom homes.

That history means a wide range of houses: early custom builds near The Village, semi-custom tracts by different builders, and newer estates in the hills. A large share were finished in the 1990s and 2000s, and they show it.

Remodeling the Tuscan era

The kitchens we see most often in Coto have heavy raised-panel doors, glazed cherry or knotty alder, corbels under the island, and a big carved hood. The rooms themselves are usually generous, with high ceilings and wide islands. The update is about the cabinets, not the floor plan.

Lighter wood, simpler doors. Rift white oak, walnut or a painted finish in a flat or narrow-rail door changes the whole room without moving a wall.

Storage inside the boxes. Older kitchens hide space behind fixed shelves and blind corners. Deep drawers, a pantry wall with roll-outs and a proper appliance garage put it to use.

Scale for the ceiling. Builder kitchens often stop well short of a ten- or twelve-foot ceiling, leaving a dusty ledge. Stacked uppers or a tall pantry wall finish the room.

Heat, dust and Santa Ana winds

Coto sits inland, where summer afternoons run much hotter than at the beach and fall brings dry Santa Ana winds. Wood reacts to those swings.

  • Stable panels for big doors. Large flat doors and island panels are built on veneered cores so they stay flat through hot, dry spells.
  • Finished on every side, so humidity moves through the wood evenly in winter rain and Santa Ana weeks alike.
  • Mudrooms that take dirt. Hard-wearing finishes, a bench with boot storage, hooks and a tall locker for riding gear keep trail dust out of the house.
  • Garages built for heat. Sealed panels and solid hardware hold up better than thin laminates in a hot three- or four-car garage.

Coto de Caza FAQ

Before you call.

How do deliveries get through the Coto de Caza gates?

Put us on your guest list for the design visit and each work day, and tell us your association's contractor hours. Large deliveries are easier when the gate knows the date and vehicle in advance, so we confirm those with you ahead of time.

Do you work in Los Ranchos Estates?

Yes. Los Ranchos is its own gated community inside Coto with a separate association, so we follow both sets of access rules.

Can you update my Tuscan-style kitchen without tearing it out to the studs?

Often, yes. Because we build to measure, new cabinets can sit on the existing footprint, keeping plumbing, gas and the range hood location, while the doors, wood, island and storage all change.

My house has very high ceilings. Can cabinets go all the way up?

Yes. We build tall runs in stacked sections with a consistent reveal, then scribe the top to the ceiling so nothing looks added on. Upper sections can hold seasonal items or display pieces behind glass.

Will heat in the garage hurt cabinets there?

Coto garages get hot in summer, which is hard on thin laminates and glued edges. We build garage cabinets with sealed panels and sturdy hardware, and keep them off the slab with a raised base or wall mounting.
